Sparkling: 2023 Le Vigne Di Alice “Doro Nature” Prosecco Di Valdobbiadene Superiore Brut

It is increasingly difficult to find A) a good prosecco and B) prosecco that is done organically and is small production. Le Vigne Di Alice is exactly that, a single vineyard vintage that is certified organic. In contrast to what people typically think of prosecco, Le Vigne Di Alice is bone dry, has vivacious bubbles, amazing notes of green orchard fruit and is mineral-laden. This bottle is perfect for New Year’s Eve or Christmas morning mimosas. It would also pair perfectly with shellfish/mollusks (oysters on the half shell) or with some hors d'oeuvres during a Christmas or New Year’s party.

Sparkling: NV Château Bonnet Crémant de Bourgogne Brut, Chénas, Beaujolais, France

We chose this producer for good reason. Château Bonnet has been making wine since 1820, and commercially selling wine since the 50s. If anyone is looking for a sparkling wine that is of the same caliber as Champagne but without the price tag, this is the one right here. It is 100% Chardonnay (Blanc De Blanc), dry, crisp, with notes of white flowers, citrus, and ripe pear with just a tiny hint of brioche. Great as an aperitif or again, a perfect wine to kick off the New Year.

Red: 2022 Vignoble Simian, Combe Des Avaux Rouge, Côtes-du-Rhône, France

Located in the southern Rhone Valley, Vignoble Simian is a family estate that has been producing wine since the late 1800s. They are certified organic and biodynamic, spontaneously fermented and aged in concrete tanks for 18 months. This red wine screams Christmas to me. It is a medium plus body red, easy tannins with notes of cherry, plum, black fruit, and a hint of baking spice.  This would pair perfectly with a Christmas ham or Christmas prime rib.

White: 2020 Zlatan Otok, Posip, Hvar, Croatia

Like all Croatian wines, this one is rich with history and the inherent joy of cultural recovery after a period of draconian government control. Croatian winemaking is historic in its contribution to winemaking, tragic in its near extinction and just as inspiring in its resurgence of native wines due to growers like Zlatan Otok. Croatia (formerly Yugoslavia) was carefully controlled by the government since the 2nd world war, forcing the burning of native grapes, making way for mass wine production.  The Posip grape featured in this wine was targeted for destruction, but it was covertly preserved by natives with a desire to preserve their culture. Zlatan Plenkovic, the producer of Zlatan Otok, began growing wine in 1986, shortly after Croatia gained their independence, focusing only on native grape varieties that had been nearly wiped out.

History aside, these wines are fantastic, with Hvar considered to be the grand cru of Croatia, having been growing grapes in this region since the 16th century from Augustinian Monks. These wines are certified organic and hand harvested.

Tasting notes of Apricots, Dried Figs, Honey with bright minerality, rich tannins, and moderate acidity. Pairs well with quite literally everything: fish, any sort of Christmas poultry, pork, cheese and dried fruits. For me personally, if someone was making the feast of seven fishes, I'd take this bottle with me to that dinner.
